Hair Loss from Cancer Treatment: What Can Be Done About It?

Cancer Headwear for women

We’ve all heard that hair loss during chemotherapy is inevitable, but there are some things you can do keep it to a minimum. While most women will still need to buy a cancer hat or chemotherapy wig,  here are some ways to feel better about yourself and make losing your hair less traumatizing.

  • Shop for a cancer wig early on, even before cancer treatment begins. This way you will be able to match the texture and color of your hair before it starts to thin out.
  • Get in the habit of wearing a hair net to bed at night so you won’t wake to find loose hairs all over your pillow.
  • Consider getting a shorter hair cut before treatment starts, so your hair loss won’t feel so dramatic.
  • When hair begins to fall out, follow these guidelines:

  • Stop getting perms and using hair color. Not only will they not take well to your thinning hair, they may make it look even worse.
  • Use only the softest baby brush on your hair.
  • Avoid heat styling of any kind, including curling irons, straightening irons and hair dryers. Instead, gently pat your hair to dry.
  • When it’s time to start covering your hair loss, here are some tips.

  • Wearing a chemotherapy wig is the most intuitive option, but it is not for everyone. Many women feel self-conscious in a wig, or they find a wig to constricting in warm weather. Consider a cancer headscarf instead, and bulk it up with a turban pad to for added “lift” at the crown.
  • Some women are more comfortable going bald, but it takes a lot of confidence to pull that off.
  • Look at the bright side. Wearing a cancer wig or a chemotherapy scarf may be difficult at first, but when you see the range of different looks these head coverings offer, you may enjoy the freedom and flexibility they afford.
