How to Prepare for Hair Loss During Chemotherapy

chemotherapy_scarf2Your doctor may have prescribed a series of treatments using chemotherapy drugs that are known to cause hair loss.  Women are especially vulnerable during this time because hair loss affects them so dramatically.  However, there are some ways to prepare yourself for cancer chemotherapy hairloss before treatment begins.  These steps will help you cope much better when your hair begins to fall out.

  1. Switch to a shorter hair cut before your treatment begins.  It is much less shocking when clumps of hair begin to fall out if the hair is short.
  2. Buy a cancer wig that you can wear after you lose your hair, but buy it before you actually need to wear it.  This will allow you to match the wig to your current hair style and color, and you will already have it on hand when you need to start wearing it.  Some women buy a couple chemotherapy wigs so they can wear one while the other is being washed or styled.
  3. Shop for chemotherapy hats or some other type of cancer headcover, such as a scarf or turban. Remember, your scalp will be very sensitive to the sun and you will lose a lot of heat through the top of your head, so prepare ahead to keep your scalp covered when outdoors.
  4. Seek out help from a cosmetologist, who can help you draw in your eyebrows so they look natural. They may also recommend false eyelashes until your real ones grow back in.
  5. Make sure you have a lot of sunscreen around to prevent your scalp from becoming sunburned.  After hair loss, your scalp will more sensitive than normal.  Combine that with sunburn and you could be too uncomfortable to wear a cancer wig.

As you go through chemotherapy, seek out a support group or someone who has already gone through cancer related hair loss.  Being prepared with a chemotherapy wig and other headcover accessories is one coping strategy that many women have found helpful.
